Bed Sores
Bed sores occur when a person is bed-ridden, unconscious, lacks the ability to sense pain or is rendered immobile. Pressure from lying in a bed or sitting in a wheel chair causes bed sores. Casts applied to broken bones can also be a culprit.
A bed sore develops when blood is cut off to an area of the skin for two or more hours. The sore reddens and slowly becomes purple and, if left untreated, will eventually burst and become infected. Bed sores take a great deal of time to heal and can be dangerous to the health of an already frail patient. The most common sites for bed sores include the buttocks and the heels of the feet.
Nursing home residents are especially prone to bed sores, as are paraplegics and other immobile patients at hospitals and rest homes. Additional cushioning on bedding and in the seat of wheel chairs can help to alleviate the cause of bed sores while proper treatment is essential to protect against infection once a bed sore forms. In the event a bed sore remains untreated or infection forms, the caretaker or healthcare professionals responsible for the victim may be at fault for the injury.
